Exhibition
Racing
and Cruising the Bay:
Boating Clubs of Anne Arundel County
June
2 - October 20, 2024
The Annapolis
Maritime Museum's latest exhibit focuses on four Annapolis boating clubs
as the first part of a series of exhibits on racing and cruising the Chesapeake
Bay. Museum volunteers have collected the history of each club in photographs
and artifacts for the presentation titled, "Racing and Cruising the
Bay: boating clubs of Anne Arundel County / Part I: Annapolis Yacht Club,
Eastport Yacht Club, Severn Sailing Association & the Seafarers."
The exhibit
opened with a reception for the exhibit at the Barge House in Eastport
on Sunday, June 2, 2002, from 5 to 7 p.m.
"These
organizations are part of what makes Annapolis truly 'America's Sailing
Capital,'" says museum founder and board president Peg Wallace. "But
nobody has told their stories in such a comprehensive manner. We've worked
with long-standing members of each of the clubs represented to rediscover
wonderful archival photography and nearly forgotten treasures that help
to bring those stories to life."
The exhibit,
which will be on display at the Barge House through October 20, 2002,
keys in on the Annapolis Yacht Club, Eastport Yacht Club, Severn Sailing
Association, and the Seafarers as a representation of a fascinating cross-section
of on-the-water activities, from open-ocean racing in large sailboats
to one-design racing in sailing dinghies, to cruising in classic motor
yachts. Future exhibits will eventually cover all the clubs ever active
anywhere in Anne Arundel County.
