Upper Bay Museum Donates
Thomas Point Lighthouse Model

Bruce McQuillin, president of the Upper Bay Museum in North East, MD, recently donated a large model of the Thomas Point Lighthouse to the Annapolis Maritime Museum. It had been built by Frederic Cone Doughty of Philadelphia, PA, and donated by the Main Line Power Squadron to the Upper Bay Museum, which passed it on to Annapolis because it's too large for their museum.

"We were delighted to accept their offer," said Jeff Holland, AMM's acting director. "Bill O'Gara and I drove up there and met Bruce and several of his volunteers. They showed us the model, and it was HUGE. It barely fit on my little utility trailer." The lighthouse is about seven feet in diameter and more than eight feet tall on its "screwpile" legs.

"We made quite a sight driving down I-95 with this big lighthouse on our tail," Jeff continued. "It was especially fun driving through the old Baltimore Harbor Tunnel, since one of the tubes was closed and we were driving through against oncoming semi's, with only centimeters of clearance on either side. Fortunately, we made it back safe and sound and it's now displayed proudly at McNasby's."

Home at last! Kevin Brooks, Jeff Holland and Bill O'Gara prepare to off-load the model at McNasby's.
