Annapolis Maritime Museum presents on-line auction for ‘Grand ole Osprey’ fund-raiser

The The Annapolis Maritime Museum has launched an on-line auction as one of the fund-raising aspects of the first annual “Grand ole Osprey” music and arts program at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007.  More than 20 auction items donated by local businesses can be previewed – and bid on – at www.annapolismaritime.cmarket.com.

Items range from an original $2,400 gold osprey pendant to tours of the historic Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse; from a three-day Bay cruise aboard the schooner Mystic Whaler to original cartoon art from “Sherman’s Lagoon,” the syndicated comic strip that appears in 150 newspapers created by noted cartoonist – and Annapolis resident – Jim Toomey.

The pendant, an exquisite gold image of an osprey with diamond eyes landing on a nest with three eggs made of natural pearls, was created by Annapolis jeweler Jeff Niland Delude of Niland & Co. Jewelers on Maryland Avenue. Cast with the lost-wax process in 1.9 ounces of 14-karat yellow gold, the pendant measures 2-3/4 inches across.

“The Grand ole Osprey is a celebration of the Chesapeake Bay with a wonderfully unique evening of local music, photographic images of the Bay and fun for the whole family,” said Deb Smith, co-chair of the event and an a member of the Museum’s Board of Directors. “This pendant perfectly embodies the spirit of the Grand ole Osprey’s celebration of our treasured Chesapeake Bay. An item this valuable isn’t an impulse-purchase for most people,” Ms. Smith explains. “When you attend fund-raisers like this, you don’t often get a chance to plan ahead for some of the most fun opportunities, like this piece of jewelry, or a vacation cottage on the coast of Maine or a cruise on the Bay. If you’re coming to this event on December first, you can choose in advance which items to bid on – and if you’re not planning to come, you can bid on line. It’s the perfect solution!”

Other items, including dinners, concerts, overnight accommodations, boat rides, cruises, fine art, spa treatments, and even a copper osprey weather vane, were contributed by the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, Maryland Hall, Sarles Boatyard & Marina, Annapolis Small Boat Rentals, Blue Crab Charters of Rock Hall, Varuna Aveda Salon, Annapolis Weathervanes, Pusser’s Caribbean Grille, the Chart House, the Marriott Waterfront Hotel, the schooner Liberté, the Frame Shop, and artists Peter Tasi and Larry Booth.

The event will kick-off with a VIP Reception from 5 - 6:30 p.m. followed by a musical program from 7 - 9 p.m. To purchase VIP tickets, visit www.annapolismaritimemuseum.org or call 410 295-0104. For general admission tickets to the program, call the Maryland Hall box office at 410 280-5640, or visit www.mdhallarts.org. VIP tickets are $75 and general admission tickets are $25 per person. Proceeds from the event will help support the Annapolis Maritime Museum’s educational programs and future development.
