Thanks to the Chesapeake Bay Gateways and Watertrails Network for an $18,000 matching grant to help expand Museum visitors’ knowledge of Captain John Smith’s historic voyages and the impact they had on the development of colonial America.
The grant will fund a series of interpretive panels entitled “From This Spot You Can See Over Four Hundred Years of History.” The cultural history panels will be divided into five centuries - 1600, 1700, 1800, 1900, 2000. Each time period will have an artist’s rendition of the same view visitors see looking out to the Chesapeake Bay. The drawings will be based upon historical images and information.
“The Chesapeake Bay is one of this nation’s treasures and to conserve it will take the active involvement of everyone who lives in or visits the Bay watershed,” said John Maounis, Superintendent of the Chesapeake Bay Gateways and Watertrails Network and the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. “The more we can help people understand and appreciate the Bay, the better equipped they will be to become the Bay’s stewards.”
AMM is one of nearly 160 sites in the Chesapeake Bay Gateways and Watertrails Network (CBGN) that connects visitors with the Chesapeake and its rivers. To learn more about CBGN, see www.baygateways.net.

Thanks to the Carol Jacobsohn Foundation, Bank of America Foundation, the Annapolis Rotary Club, Watermark Cruises, VisionWorkshops, and all the other partners and volunteers who make AMM’s many education programs possible. Here, students from Eastport Elementary School’s Title I after-school program, “Chesapeake Champions,” learn the art of photojournalism, using a great horned owl from the DNR’s Scales & Tails program as a subject. Their photographs will be on display at the Bank of America Church Circle branch this summer.
